After working for 3 years Dr. Chau and his wife, Irene, decided to make Tasmania home and he commenced private practice in 1969.
As well as running a successful dental practice he has also achieved many professional accolades.

Associate Professor Ralph Reid BDSC, MDS, FICD - Endodontist
I was born in Brisbane in November 1945. I graduated as a dentist from the University of Queensland in early 1969 and then worked at the Hospital Dental Clinic in Stanthorpe for almost two years. Late in 1970, I bought a general dental practice in Goondiwindi (a small town, five hours by car west of Brisbane). I practiced as a general dentist there for the next ten years. During this time, I married my beautiful wife Christine and we had three gorgeous children – John, Penelope and Jill.
In 1979, I sold this practice and went back to being a full time student, at the University of Adelaide. For the next two years I studied endodontics and received my Master of Dental Surgery degree, allowing me to be registered as a specialist endodontist. The family returned to Brisbane where I established a specialist endodontic practice in the CBD. I have been a member of the Australian Dental Association since graduation as a dentist. I joined the Australian Society of Endodontology in 1978 and was Federal President of that Society from 1995-97. I was also a member of the Dental Study Club of Brisbane and was President of it in 1999. I am an International member of the American Association of Endodontists and an inaugural member of the Australian and New Zealand Academy of Endodontists. I was the Australian representative to the International Federation of Endodontic Associations 1997-2007, being the Regent Director for the Oceania region 1998-2007. During this time I was Chairman of the Education Committee. In 2004, I was President of the Sixth Endodontic World Congress in Brisbane. I have been Editor of the Australian Endodontic Journal since 2006, during which time it has become recognized as an international endodontic Journal. In 1999, I was invited to become a Fellow of the International College of Dentists.
I am an Associate Professor at the University of Queensland, teaching Pathology (previously) and Endodontics at both the undergraduate and postgraduate level. I have published research in the International Endodontic Journal and have lectured to numerous local groups. I have been asked to be the External Examiner for the Post-Graduate programmes in Otago (New Zealand) and Melbourne. I am now a visiting specialist to a number of dental practices which I enjoy very much.
I am a keen (although not brilliant) golfer. I have played fixture squash and for ten years was a rugby referee. I enjoy cooking and eating, as well as fishing, exercising, travelling, classical concerts and opera. The joy of my life is my family which has now been expanded by four beautiful grandchildren – two granddaughters and two grandsons.
